Julia's Skiing Career
Early Competitions
Julia Murray started her career in World Cup races. In the 2008–09 World Cup tour, she finished 6th overall. The next year, in the 2009–10 World Cup, she finished 4th.
The 2010 Olympics
Julia was part of the Canadian Olympic team for the 2010 Winter Games. These games were held in Vancouver, close to her hometown of Whistler. Just one week before the Winter X Games XIV, Julia got hurt. She tore a ligament and meniscus in her knee during training.
This injury meant she could not compete in the X Games. However, she still went to watch. Her teammates, Ashleigh McIvor and Kelsey Serwa, finished second and third. It was not clear if Julia would be able to compete in the Olympics. On February 2, 2010, she had surgery on her knee. She believed she would recover in time for the ski cross events.
At the Olympics, Julia made it to the quarter-finals. But she was clearly in pain while skiing. She did not make it to the semi-finals. After the race, she told CTV that her knee hurt a lot.
Later Career and Retirement
The next season, Julia still struggled with her injured knee. Despite this, she achieved a big success. She won the silver medal at the 2011 World Championships. She finished second behind her teammate, Kelsey Serwa.
However, a second knee injury forced her to stop skiing for the rest of the year. This also kept her out of the 2011–12 season. Julia took time off to heal properly and focus on her education. She worried she had rushed back too soon from her first injury. She wanted to be completely ready before returning this time.
Because of the injuries she had during her career, Julia decided to retire in June 2012. She was 23 years old. Her teammate, Ashleigh McIvor, who won an Olympic gold medal, also retired later that year due to injuries.
