About Julia Murray
Julia Murray comes from a family of skiers. Both her parents were on Canadian national ski teams. Her father, Dave Murray, was one of the famous "Crazy Canucks." This group of skiers was well-known for their downhill skiing in the 1970s and 80s.
Julia's mother is Stephanie Sloan. She was a three-time world champion in freestyle skiing. Stephanie competed in different freestyle events like Moguls, Aerials, and Ski Ballet. Julia's father passed away from skin cancer when she was very young, at 22 months old.
Today, Julia has her own business called Jules Fuel Whistler Superfood. She makes superfood cereal. She is also studying to become a Holistic Nutritionist. This means she learns about how food and lifestyle affect health. Julia also helped start the "Ski with An Olympian" program at Whistler Blackcomb.
In 2018, Julia married another Canadian freestyle skier, Davey Barr.
Julia's Skiing Career
Julia started her career by competing in World Cup events. In the 2008–09 World Cup season, she finished 6th overall. The next year, in the 2009–10 World Cup, she placed 4th.
Julia was chosen to be part of the Canadian Olympic team for the 2010 Winter Olympics. These games were held in Vancouver, close to her hometown of Whistler. Just one week before a big event called Winter X Games XIV, Julia hurt her knee during training. She tore her medial collateral ligament and her medial meniscus. This injury meant she could not compete in the X Games. Her teammates, Ashleigh McIvor and Kelsey Serwa, won second and third place there.
It was not clear if Julia would be able to compete in the Olympics because of her injury. On February 2, 2010, she had surgery on her knee. Julia believed she would recover in time for the ski cross events at the Olympics.
At the Olympics, Julia made it to the quarter-finals. However, she was clearly in pain while skiing. She did not make it to the semi-finals. After her race, she told CTV that her knee hurt a lot.
The next season, Julia still had problems with her injured knee. Despite this, she achieved a great success. She won a silver medal at the 2011 World Championships. She finished second behind her teammate, Kelsey Serwa. However, another knee injury kept her from competing in the 2011–12 season. Julia took time off to heal properly and focus on her education. She wanted to be completely sure she was ready before returning to the sport.
Because of the many injuries she had during her career, Julia decided to retire in June 2012. She was only 23 years old. Her teammate, Ashleigh McIvor, who won an Olympic gold medal, also retired later that year due to injuries.
