Julian Byrn Goodman (born May 1, 1922 – died July 2, 2012) was an important American leader in television and radio. He was also a journalist, which means he reported the news. He worked for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) for many years.

Early Life and Education

Julian Goodman was born in Glasgow, Kentucky. He went to Glasgow High School in his hometown. He strongly believed in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This amendment protects important freedoms like freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

He started his career as a reporter. He earned only $3 a week working for The Glasgow Daily Times newspaper. From 1939 to 1942, he studied economics at Western Kentucky State Teachers College. In 1943, he joined the United States Army and served for a few months. After his time in the Army, he moved to Washington, D.C. He graduated from George Washington University in 1948.

Career at NBC

While at George Washington University, Julian Goodman met William McAndrew. Mr. McAndrew helped him get a job at NBC, working on the night news desk. Goodman was known for being a dedicated worker. He never asked for a raise or a promotion during his career.

He played a big role in making Chet Huntley and David Brinkley a very famous news team. They hosted The Huntley-Brinkley Report, which was a popular evening news show. Goodman became the president of NBC in 1966 and served in that role until 1974. During his time as president, he made a big deal to keep Johnny Carson as the host of The Tonight Show. This show was, and still is, a very popular late-night talk show.

Goodman also worked to end something called the Fairness Doctrine. This was a rule that required broadcasters to present different viewpoints on important public issues. He believed it limited free speech.

Julian Goodman was also a member of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors from 1986 to 1992. The Peabody Awards recognize excellence in television, radio, and online media.
