Julian Dana William McMahon (born 27 July 1968) was an actor from both Australia and the United States. He was the only son of Sir William McMahon, who used to be the Prime Minister of Australia. Julian McMahon was famous for his roles in TV shows like Home and Away, Charmed, Nip/Tuck, and FBI: Most Wanted. He also played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies. For his work in Nip/Tuck, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Julian McMahon passed away on July 2, 2025.

Julian McMahon's Early Life

Julian Dana William McMahon was born in Sydney, Australia, on July 27, 1968. His mother, Sonia, was well-known in society and fashion. His father, William McMahon, was an important Australian politician. Julian's father became the 20th Prime Minister of Australia when Julian was two years old.
Julian had two sisters. He went to Sydney Grammar School, an all-boys school, just like his father. As a child, he dreamed of being in the army and playing rugby. He briefly studied law and economics at university.
Starting His Career
Julian McMahon began modeling when he was 17. He traveled to big fashion cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Paris. After his father passed away in 1988, Julian returned to Australia. While there, he filmed some commercials. These commercials helped him get his first acting role in the Australian TV show Home and Away.
Julian McMahon's Acting Career
Julian McMahon's first TV acting job was in a show called The Power, The Passion. He then joined Home and Away in 1989, playing a character named Benito "Ben" Lucini. He decided not to continue his contract after a year.
Moving to Hollywood
In the early 1990s, Julian McMahon moved to the United States. His big break in Hollywood came in 1993. He was cast as Ian Rain in the soap opera Another World. He remembered his first scene as "pretty magical."
Julian McMahon became well-known for his roles in American TV dramas. He played Detective John Grant in Profiler from 1996 to 2000. He was also Cole Turner in the supernatural show Charmed from 2000 to 2003. One of his most famous roles was Dr. Christian Troy in the medical drama Nip/Tuck, which he starred in from 2003 to 2010.
Movies and Other Roles
Julian McMahon also appeared in several movies. He played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies in 2005 and 2007. He was in Premonition with Sandra Bullock in 2007. He also appeared in Red in 2010 and Bait 3D in 2012.
In 2018, Julian McMahon returned to Australia to film Swinging Safari. He found it challenging to speak with an Australian accent again. This was because he had mostly used an American accent for his acting career.
From 2020 to 2022, Julian McMahon starred as Jess LaCroix in the TV show FBI: Most Wanted. He also made guest appearances in the related shows FBI and FBI: International. He left FBI: Most Wanted during its third season.
Julian McMahon often played characters who were villains or had difficult lives. He felt drawn to these kinds of roles. His last acting role was in the TV series The Residence in 2025.

In 1994, Julian McMahon married singer and actress Dannii Minogue. They had met on the set of Home and Away. They divorced about a year and a half later.
In 1999, he married actress Brooke Burns. They had one daughter together before they divorced in 2001. Julian McMahon married for a third time in 2014 to Kelly Paniagua.
Julian McMahon lived in the United States from the 1990s until his death. However, he always felt connected to Australia. He became a citizen of the United States but kept his Australian citizenship.
Julian McMahon passed away on July 2, 2025, in Clearwater, Florida. He was 56 years old. He died from lung cancer that had spread from head and neck cancer.
