Julian Dana William McMahon (born July 27, 1968 – died July 2, 2025) was an actor from Australia and America. He was the son of Sir William McMahon, who used to be the Prime Minister of Australia. Julian McMahon became famous for playing many different characters. Some of his well-known roles include Ben Lucini in Home and Away, Cole Turner in Charmed, and Dr. Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck. He also played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies. For his work in Nip/Tuck, he was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

Growing Up: Julian McMahon's Early Years

Julian McMahon was born in Sydney, Australia. His father was Sir William McMahon, a very important politician. His mother was Lady McMahon, known for her style. Julian's father was a member of the Australian Parliament for many years. He became the Prime Minister of Australia in 1971. Julian was two years old at that time. Julian had two sisters, Melinda and Deborah. His family had roots in Ireland.

Julian went to Sydney Grammar School, an all-boys school. As a child, he dreamed of joining the army and playing rugby. He later studied law and economics at university. But he found these subjects were not for him. So, he started a career in modeling. He traveled to big fashion cities like Milan, London, and New York.

In 1988, Julian's father passed away. Julian returned to Australia for the funeral. While there, he filmed some commercials. These commercials helped him get his first acting job. It was on the popular Australian TV show Home and Away.

Julian's Acting Journey

Julian McMahon started his TV acting career in a show called The Power, The Passion. Then, in 1990, he joined Home and Away as Ben Lucini. He decided to leave the show in 1990.

Moving to Hollywood

In the early 1990s, Julian wanted to work in the United States. It was hard to get a work permit at first. His big chance in Hollywood came with the soap opera Another World in 1993. He played a character named Ian Rain. He remembered his first scene as "pretty magical."

Julian became well-known for his roles in American TV shows. He played Detective John Grant in Profiler (1996–2000). He was also Cole Turner in the fantasy show Charmed (2000–2003). Later, he played Dr. Christian Troy in the medical drama Nip/Tuck (2003–2010).

Big Screen Roles

Julian also acted in many movies. He played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies (2005 and 2007). He appeared with Sandra Bullock in Premonition (2007). He also worked with Bruce Willis in Red (2010).

His roles in Charmed and Nip/Tuck brought him a lot of success. Charmed won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. For Nip/Tuck, Julian was nominated for a Golden Globe Award himself.

Recent Work

In 2018, Julian went back to Australia to film Swinging Safari. He acted alongside stars like Guy Pearce and Kylie Minogue. The movie was set in the 1970s. Julian said it was hard to use an Australian accent again. He had gotten used to speaking with an American accent for most of his career.

From 2020 to 2022, Julian starred in the CBS crime drama FBI: Most Wanted. He played Jess LaCroix, a lead character. He also appeared in related shows like FBI and FBI: International. Julian left FBI: Most Wanted during its third season.

Julian often played characters who were villains or had complex personalities. He found these types of roles interesting.

Julian's Life Off-Screen

Julian McMahon once joked that his mother was "a very scary lady." She would visit him on set and tell him what she thought of his acting!

In 1994, Julian married singer and actress Dannii Minogue. They had met on the set of Home and Away. He even appeared in her music video. They divorced about a year and a half later. Their busy careers often kept them apart.

In 1999, Julian married actress Brooke Burns. They had a daughter in June 2000. They later divorced in 2001. Julian married for a third time in 2014 to Kelly Paniagua.

Julian lived in the United States for many years. But he always felt connected to Australia. He once said, "I feel like I'm Australian on the inside and American on the outside." He loved his Australian roots and where he grew up.

Julian McMahon passed away on July 2, 2025. He was 56 years old. He died in Clearwater, Florida.
