Julian Alfred Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers (born March 16, 1919 – died August 12, 2001) was a British expert who studied people and cultures. He was known as a social anthropologist and an ethnographer. He also taught at universities in three different countries.

Family background

Julian Pitt-Rivers was the great-grandson of the famous archaeologist Augustus Pitt Rivers. His father, George Henry Lane-Fox Pitt-Rivers, was also an anthropologist and came from a wealthy family. His mother, Mary Hinton, was an actress. Her father, the 1st Baron Forster, was once the Governor-General of Australia.

Julian's parents divorced in 1930. Later, his father married Dr Rosalind Pitt-Rivers, a well-known biochemist. Julian had two brothers: Michael from his father's first marriage, and Anthony from his father's second marriage, born in 1932.

Education and scholarship

Julian Pitt-Rivers went to Eton College and Worcester College, Oxford for his education. He became an ethnographer, someone who studies different cultures by living with people and observing their ways of life. He believed it was important to understand and respect different cultures. This was a different view from his father, who held strong, controversial ideas about people.

Julian Pitt-Rivers earned his doctorate degree in 1953. This degree came from his research in Andalusia, Spain. His work there led to his famous book, The People of the Sierra, published in 1954. His professor from Oxford, E. E. Evans-Pritchard, wrote the introduction for the book.

He taught at several universities, including the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Chicago in the United States. He also taught at the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom and at universities in France, such as the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris.

Personal life

Julian Pitt-Rivers was married three times. His first wife was Pauline Laetitia Tennant, whom he married in 1946. They divorced in 1953. In 1955, he married Margarita Larios y Fernández de Villavicencio. They divorced in 1971. His third wife was Françoise Geoffroy, whom he married in 1971. She was still alive when he passed away. Julian Pitt-Rivers did not have any children. He died on August 12, 2001.
