Julian Richard Morley Sands (born 4 January 1958) was an English actor. He was well-known for his role as George Emerson in the 1985 film A Room with a View. He also appeared in many other movies like Warlock (1989) and Arachnophobia (1990). On TV, he played characters in shows such as 24 and Smallville.

Julian Sands went missing on 13 January 2023 while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles. His remains were found on 24 June 2023 in the same area.

Early Life and First Roles

Julian Richard Morley Sands was born in Otley, England, on 4 January 1958. He started his acting career with smaller roles in films. These included Oxford Blues (1984) and The Killing Fields (1984). He also had a small part in the TV show The Box of Delights in 1984.

Rising to Fame

Julian Sands became famous when he played the main romantic role in the 1985 film A Room with a View. After this movie was a success, he moved to Hollywood. He wanted to act in American films. He took on the main role in the horror movie Warlock (1989) and its sequel. He also appeared in other well-known films like Arachnophobia (1990) and Boxing Helena (1993).

Later Career and Voice Work

Sands continued to act in many different types of films. He played Erik, also known as the Phantom, in the 1998 horror version of The Phantom of the Opera. He also acted alongside Jackie Chan in the action-comedy film The Medallion (2003).

On television, Julian Sands was the voice of Valmont in the first two seasons of Jackie Chan Adventures. He also played the Doci of the Ori in the TV show Stargate SG-1. In 2006, he played the terrorist Vladimir Bierko in the popular series 24. Sands also played Jor-El, Superman's biological father, in Smallville. In 2012, he voiced the character DeFalco in the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

In 2011, Julian Sands performed on stage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This show was a tribute to the writer Harold Pinter. His performance was even nominated for an award.

Personal Life

Julian Sands was married twice. From 1984 to 1987, he was married to Sarah Harvey. They had one son together. In 1990, he married Evgenia Citkowitz. She is a playwright and author. They had two daughters. Julian Sands was a very private person. He did not often talk about his family in interviews. From 2020 until his death, he and his family lived in Los Angeles, California.

His Disappearance and Legacy

Julian Sands was a very keen mountaineer. On 13 January 2023, he went missing while hiking on Mount Baldy in California. This area is known for its challenging trails. Search efforts began, but severe storms made it very difficult. His car was found on 18 January. His children also joined the search to help find their father.

The search teams faced dangerous conditions, including icy trails and the risk of avalanches. Julian Sands' family thanked the search teams for their hard work. On 24 June 2023, hikers found human remains in the area where Sands had disappeared. These remains were identified as Julian Sands on 27 June 2023. His family shared a statement, remembering him as a "wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer."
