Juliana of Hesse-Darmstadt was a noblewoman born on April 14, 1606, in Darmstadt, Germany. She became the wife of Count Ulrich II of East Frisia. After her husband passed away, she took on an important role as the regent for her young son, Enno Louis, from 1648 to 1651. Her parents were Landgrave Louis V of Hesse-Darmstadt and Magdalene of Brandenburg.
Early Life and Marriage
Juliana arrived in East Frisia on March 5, 1631. On the very same day, she married Count Ulrich II. Together, they had three sons: Enno Louis, George Christian, and Edzard Ferdinand.
Even during the difficult times of the Thirty Years' War, Ulrich managed to build a beautiful pleasure palace, called a Lustschloss, for Juliana at Sandhorst. This palace was finished in 1648. East Frisia faced many challenges during the war, as different foreign armies occupied parts of the region.
Becoming a Regent
After her husband's death, Juliana was chosen to be the guardian for her young sons. She also became the regent of the county. This meant she was in charge of governing East Frisia until her sons were old enough to rule.
However, Juliana sent her sons away for their education. She then focused on her own interests, leaving the county's management to people she favored. These people did not manage the county well, especially since it was still recovering from the war. This led to growing problems with the East Frisian Estates, which were like a council of important people representing the different groups in the county.
Challenges and Changes
Among Juliana's favored advisors were Johann von Marenholz and his wife, Elisabeth von Ungnad. Many people in East Frisia felt that under their management, the county's problems became much worse. They urged the young Count Enno Louis to come back and take control of his county.
Johann von Marenholz was eventually put on trial and executed in Wittmund on July 21, 1651. Meanwhile, Juliana had moved the court from Aurich to Sandhorst.
In 1651, Emperor Ferdinand III declared that Enno Louis was old enough to rule. In May of that year, Enno Louis removed his mother from her role in the government. She was sent to live at Berum Castle, which was her Wittum (a property given to a widow for her support). In 1654, Juliana bought a farm called Westerhof in Osterode am Harz, where she lived until her death on January 15, 1659.
