History of Aurich
The story of Aurich began in the 13th century. The settlement was first mentioned in a document called the Brokmerbrief in 1276. Back then, it was known as Aurechove.
People have different ideas about where the name Aurich comes from. It might be named after a person called Affo and their land. Or, it could be linked to the water systems around the Aa (or Ehe) river. The town was built on this fertile, water-rich land. Over time, the name changed through many different spellings.
In 1517, Count Edzard started to rebuild the town. This happened after an attack. By 1539, Aurich became the capital of the county. It stayed an important administrative center even when the Kingdom of Prussia took over East Frisia in 1744.
Aurich's rulers changed several times. After the Prussian army lost a battle in 1807, Aurich became part of the Kingdom of Holland in 1808. Then, in 1810, France took over the Kingdom of Holland. Aurich became the capital of a French department called Ems-Oriental.
After Napoleon was defeated in 1814, Aurich joined the Kingdom of Hanover in 1815. Later, in 1866, it was taken over by Prussia again. It became part of the Province of Hanover.
During World War II, a camp was located near Aurich for a short time, from October to December 1944. After the war, Aurich became part of the new German state of Lower Saxony.
Local Government
Aurich has a local council that helps run the town. This council has 40 members. These members are chosen by elections.

The coat of arms is like a special symbol for Aurich. It shows a landscape with a sky at the top and earth at the bottom. In the middle, there is a red shield with a golden letter 'A'. Above the 'A' is a golden crown. On each side of the shield, there are two green trees growing.
The top part of the coat of arms has a red wall with three points and two openings. Below the shield, there are two branches of mistletoe with golden leaves and berries.
