Julianne Marie Malveaux (born September 22, 1953) is an American economist, author, and speaker. She is known for sharing her ideas about social and political topics. For five years, she was the 15th president of Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Learning and Career

Julianne Malveaux started college at Boston College after finishing 11th grade. She earned two degrees in economics there in just three years. Later, in 1980, she earned her PhD in economics from MIT. She also has special honorary degrees from several other colleges.

A Writer and Speaker

As a writer, Julianne Malveaux has had her articles published in many well-known places. These include USA Today, Ms. magazine, and Essence magazine. Her weekly articles also appear in many newspapers across the country.

She has also appeared on many TV shows to share her thoughts. You might have seen her on channels like CNN, BET, and PBS. She has also hosted her own radio shows in different cities. In 2008, she was a panelist on a CNN show called Black in America: Reclaiming the Dream.

Helping Others and Teaching

Julianne Malveaux is very active in different organizations. She is on the board of the Economic Policy Institute. She also leads PUSH Excel, which is the education part of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. She also started her own non-profit organization called Economic Education in Washington, D.C.

In 1990, she helped create a group called the African-American Women for Reproductive Freedom. This group was formed by 16 African-American women and men.

She has taught at many universities over the years. These include San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley. She has also been a visiting professor at places like Michigan State University and Howard University. In 2017, she gave a special series of lectures at Harvard University.

Leading a College

On June 1, 2007, Julianne Malveaux became the 15th President of Bennett College for Women. This college is in Greensboro, North Carolina. In February 2012, she announced that she would step down from this role in May 2012. She said she would continue to support historically black colleges and universities in other ways.

In 2021, she was chosen to be the dean of the new college of Ethnic Studies at California State University, Los Angeles.
