Julie began acting on television in 1960. She was only 18 years old. Her first TV appearance was on The Loretta Young Show.

From 1969 to 1970, Julie Sommars had a main role in the CBS comedy series The Governor & J.J.. She played Jennifer Jo "J.J." Drinkwater. She was the daughter of the "Governor," played by Dan Dailey.
