Early Life and Family
Julio Cesar's father, Julian Firrufino, was also a famous teacher. He taught geometry and artillery. The King of Spain gave him this important job.
We don't know a lot about Julio Cesar's early life. But we think he was born around 1578. This was when his father was teaching about naval artillery in Seville, Spain. So, Julio Cesar was probably born there.
A Career in Mathematics
In 1600, Julio Cesar started working as an assistant. He helped the Spanish minister of Artillery. This was a very important role.
After his father passed away in 1604, Julio Cesar took over his job. He became a professor of Mathematics and Fortification. Fortification is about designing and building strong defenses. Two important experts, Andrés García de Céspedes and João Baptista Lavanha, approved him for the role.
Julio Cesar taught in Madrid until 1650. This was just one year before he passed away. His student, Luis Carduchi, took over his teaching position. The Carduchi family were old friends of Firrufino.
His Important Work
In 1626, Julio Cesar published a book called Plática Manual y Breve Compendio de Artillería. This book was a shorter version of a bigger work he had written. He wasn't allowed to publish the full version for political reasons.
His most important book came out in 1648. It was called El perfecto artillero, which means "The Perfect Artilleryman." This book was like an encyclopedia about artillery. It included many ideas from an earlier mathematician named Niccolò Fontana Tartaglia.
Challenges in His Career
Julio Cesar faced some difficulties during his career. In 1638, there were questions about how some artillery guns were made in Seville. He was held for a short time in 1644 while this was looked into. Despite this, he continued his important work in mathematics and artillery.
