Juncos barrio-pueblo is a special part of Juncos. It is the main town center, also called the seat of the municipality. In 2010, about 2,464 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, like in Spain, each main town has a special area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a central town square, the main government buildings (like the city hall), and a Catholic church. Every year, fun festivals called Fiestas patronales (which celebrate a patron saint) are held in this central square.
The Heart of Juncos: The Central Plaza
The central plaza, or town square, is a very important place in Juncos. It's where people gather for fun events and to simply hang out. People can meet friends and family here from morning until night.
Long ago, in the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided how towns in Puerto Rico were built. These laws said that the plaza should be a good size for celebrations and for all the people living nearby. The laws also said that the streets around the plaza should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
Right across from the central plaza in Juncos barrio-pueblo, you will find the Parroquia Inmaculada Concepción. This is a Roman Catholic church, an important part of the community.
A Look at Juncos' History
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 2,026 people lived in Juncos Pueblo at that time. The population has changed over the years, as shown in the table below.
