Juniata, also known as Juniata Park, is a lively neighborhood in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Many different families live here, with a mix of Hispanic and Caucasian people.

You can find Juniata south of the Juniata Golf Club, close to Tacony Creek Park. It's surrounded by other neighborhoods like Frankford, Feltonville, Harrowgate, and Port Richmond. The Tacony Creek forms its eastern border, and train tracks are to the south. Juniata shares a ZIP code (19124) with Frankford.

History of Juniata

Long ago, before the 1920s, Juniata Park was mostly open farmland. There were old roads like Nicetown Lane and Powder Mill Lane. These roads connected different parts of the area.

The first homes in Juniata Park were built in the mid-1920s. These were "row homes," which are houses built in a line, sharing side walls. More homes were added in the western part of Juniata during the 1950s.

Getting Around Juniata

The Market–Frankford Line is an elevated train that runs through the neighborhood. You can catch the train at the Erie-Torresdale Station. This station is located where Erie and Torresdale Avenues meet.

The Juniata News is the neighborhood's own weekly newspaper. It started way back in July 1934. Most of the shops and businesses in Juniata are found along Castor, Hunting Park, and Erie Avenues.

In 1935, a special group of buildings called the Carl Mackley Houses were built. These are now apartments and are located near Castor Avenue.

When Juniata Park was first built in the 1920s and 1930s, many German-American families lived there. There were German bakeries and grocery stores. Jewish grocery and drug stores were also common. The neighborhood was known for having many people who belonged to labor unions.

Since the 1990s, Juniata has become a very diverse neighborhood. Many families of Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage have moved to the area. In 2010, the population was about 59.6% Hispanic, 18.1% White, 14.5% Black, and 7.7% Asian and other groups.
