A Brief History of Junior

The town of Junior was officially started on November 13, 1897. It was named after a young man named Henry "Harry" Gassaway Davis, Jr. He was the son of Henry Gassaway Davis, Sr., who was a very important person.

Henry Gassaway Davis, Sr. (1823–1916) was a U.S. Senator and a successful businessman in the coal industry. Sadly, his son, Henry Jr. (1871–1896), drowned at sea. This happened while he was traveling home on a ship called the Munkesenton off the coast of South Africa. The town was named in his memory.
