Where is Junland Located?
Junland is found in the southeastern part of Missouri. It sits right where two important roads meet: Missouri Route B and Missouri Route Z. Route B used to be part of the older Route 60. This community is about five miles east of a bigger town called Poplar Bluff. In the past, Junland was also a stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
How Junland Got Its Name
The name "Junland" is a shorter, changed version of the word "jungleland." This name was chosen because of how the area looked when it was first settled. It was likely wild and overgrown, much like a jungle.
What Happened in the 2013 Tornado?
On January 29, 2013, Junland was hit by a strong tornado. This tornado was rated as an EF2. The "EF" stands for Enhanced Fujita Scale, which measures how powerful a tornado is. An EF2 tornado has winds between 111 and 135 miles per hour.
Impact of the Tornado
The tornado caused a lot of damage in Junland.
- One small, old house was completely destroyed.
- A mobile home was also ruined.
- A few other small buildings were blown over.
- Many trees in the tornado's path were snapped in half.
Even though it caused significant damage, thankfully, the community has recovered since then.
