Jupp Kapellmann started his professional football career with Alemannia Aachen in 1968. This was a special time because the team had just been promoted to the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. In his first season, 1968–69, Alemannia Aachen finished in second place, which was a great start!
After one year, in 1970, Jupp moved to 1. FC Köln. Alemannia Aachen was unfortunately relegated (moved down a league) that year. At 1. FC Köln, Jupp became a regular player in the midfield. He helped the team finish second in the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) in the 1972–73 season.
Joining Bayern Munich
Because of his excellent performances, FC Bayern Munich signed Jupp in 1973. They paid a lot of money for him – 802,000 Deutsche Mark – which was a record amount in the Bundesliga at that time!
At Bayern Munich, Jupp mostly played as a defender. This was a very successful period for him. He was part of the team that won the European Cup (now called the UEFA Champions League) three times in a row: in 1973–74, 1974–75, and 1975–76.
He also won the Bundesliga title with Bayern in 1973–74. In 1976, his team won the Intercontinental Cup, which was a match between the best teams from Europe and South America.
Later Career and Retirement
After playing 165 matches for Bayern Munich, Jupp moved to their local rival, TSV 1860 Munich, in 1979. He played for two seasons there, adding 40 more Bundesliga matches to his career. In total, Jupp played 338 Bundesliga matches and scored 36 goals.
Playing for Germany
Jupp Kapellmann also played for the West Germany national team. He appeared in five games between 1973 and 1974.
In 1974, Germany hosted the FIFA World Cup. Jupp was part of the West German squad for this tournament. Even though he didn't play in the matches, he was there to see his team lift the World Cup trophy!
