Juriques is a tall volcano located right on the border between two South American countries: Bolivia and Chile. It stands proudly in the Andes mountain range. This volcano is a type called a stratovolcano, which means it's shaped like a cone and built up over time by layers of hardened lava, ash, and rock.
Juriques is very close to another famous volcano called Licancabur, sitting just to its southeast. The top of Juriques reaches an amazing height of 5,704 meters (about 18,714 feet) above sea level. It has a large crater at its summit, which is about 1.5 kilometers (nearly 1 mile) long. At the base of Juriques, you can find a beautiful lake called Laguna Verde, known for its green color.
What is a Stratovolcano?
A stratovolcano is a type of volcano that looks like a giant cone. It's built up over many eruptions. Each eruption adds new layers of lava, ash, and volcanic rocks. These layers make the volcano grow taller and steeper over time.
Stratovolcanoes are also known as composite volcanoes. They often have explosive eruptions. This is because thick, sticky lava and gases can get trapped inside. When the pressure builds up, it can cause a powerful eruption.
Where is Juriques Located?
Juriques is found in the Andes mountains. This huge mountain range runs along the western side of South America. The volcano sits exactly on the border between Bolivia and Chile.
Being on the border means it's part of two different countries. It's located in the Potosí Department in Bolivia and the Antofagasta Region in Chile. This area is known for its many volcanoes and high-altitude landscapes.
How Big is Juriques?
The summit, or top, of Juriques is 5,704 meters (18,714 feet) high. This makes it one of the "five-thousanders" of the Andes, meaning it's over 5,000 meters tall. Imagine climbing that high!
At the very top, Juriques has a large crater. This crater is about 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) across at its longest point. Craters are bowl-shaped openings where volcanic material comes out.
