Playing Career
Starting with the Dallas Stars
Jokinen was chosen by the Dallas Stars in the sixth round of the 2001 NHL Draft. Before playing in the NHL, he spent four seasons with Oulun Kärpät in Finland's top league, the SM-liiga.
In his first NHL season (2005–06), Jokinen quickly became known as one of the best shootout players. He scored nine times in a row in shootouts before missing his first shot. On November 16, 2007, he scored four goals in one game against the Colorado Avalanche, helping his team win 6–1.

Moving to Tampa Bay and Carolina
On February 26, 2008, Jokinen was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He finished that season with 16 goals and 42 points.
A year later, on February 7, 2009, he was traded again, this time to the Carolina Hurricanes. During the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs, Jokinen scored a very important goal. On April 21, he scored the winning goal with only 0.2 seconds left in the game! This helped the Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils in the playoffs. He was very good at shootouts, scoring 25 goals in 46 attempts by November 2009.
During the 2012–13 NHL lockout, when NHL games were paused, Jokinen went back to play for his old Finnish club, Kärpät.
Time with the Pittsburgh Penguins
On April 3, 2013, Jokinen was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In his very first game with the Penguins, he scored a goal and also the winning shootout goal, helping his new team win.
In the 2013–14 season, Jokinen scored his first "hat-trick" (three goals in one game) for the Penguins. This happened on October 8, 2013, against his former team, the Carolina Hurricanes. He had a great season, scoring 21 goals and 57 points, often playing alongside star player Evgeni Malkin.
Playing for the Florida Panthers
On July 1, 2014, Jokinen signed a four-year contract with the Florida Panthers. In his second season with the Panthers, he had one of his best years, scoring 18 goals and 60 points. He also helped the team in the playoffs, scoring one goal and three assists in six games.
Final NHL Stops
After the 2016–17 season, the Panthers decided to release Jokinen from his contract. He then signed with the Edmonton Oilers on July 7, 2017. However, he only played 14 games for them before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings.
Jokinen then moved to the Columbus Blue Jackets and finally to the Vancouver Canucks in the same season. This meant he played for four different NHL teams in one season, which is very rare! Only a few players in NHL history have done this. He also managed to score at least one point for each of those four teams.
Return to Europe and Retirement
After his time in the NHL, Jokinen returned to Europe. He played a few games for EHC Kloten in Switzerland before going back to his original Finnish team, Oulun Kärpät.
After playing three more seasons in Finland, Jussi Jokinen announced his retirement from hockey on May 18, 2021. He had played for 20 seasons!
