Just Like Mom was a fun Canadian TV game show. It aired from 1980 to 1985 on the CTV network. A total of 595 episodes were filmed in Toronto, Ontario.
The show was first hosted by Stephen Young. Later, a husband-and-wife team, Fergie Olver and Catherine Swing, took over. Catherine Swing also created the show! The main idea was to see how well kids and their moms (or sometimes dads) knew each other. They did this by matching answers and, most famously, with a "Bake-off Challenge." Three teams, each with a child and a parent, competed in every episode. You might have seen reruns on YTV in 1988 or GameTV from 2008 to 2010.
In 2009, a company called marblemedia bought the rights to Just Like Mom. They planned to create a new and updated version called Just Like Mom and Dad. This new show aired in 2018 on Yes TV in Canada and BYU TV in the United States.
How the Game Worked
Question Rounds
First, the parents would go offstage. The children would then answer several questions. At the start of the show, kids chose from five different topics. Later, each team had a specific question already picked for them. The hosts would take turns asking each child questions.
After the children answered, the parents would come back. They were asked the same questions. The goal was to see if the parents could guess what their children had said. If a parent's answer matched their child's answer for the first question, they earned 10 points. A match for the second question was worth 15 points.
For the next round, the process was flipped. The parents answered questions first. Then, the children tried to match their parents' answers. Correct matches in this round were worth 20 points for the first question. The second question was worth 25 points if matched correctly.
The Bake-Off Challenge
Between the two question rounds, the children had a special challenge. They had to complete a given recipe in 60 seconds. These recipes came from the Robin Hood Just Like Mom Cookbook. Kids were given all the basic ingredients. They also had some unusual ingredients. They could use whatever they wanted in their creations!
After the second question round, the parents tasted each of the three dishes. The children were taken to another part of the stage. Parents had 30 seconds to taste each numbered dish. Then, they had to decide which one their child made. They would hold up a numbered sign at the same time as their child. The team with the lowest score went first. If the parent correctly picked their child's dish, they earned 50 points!
Winning Prizes
The team with the highest score got to spin a prize wheel. The wheel had 16 sections, each with a different prize. They won whatever prize the wheel landed on. If two teams had the same score, both got to spin the wheel for a prize.
The biggest prize was a trip for two to Walt Disney World. This amazing trip was on four spots on the wheel. In later seasons, all contestants received a prize. This prize was a trip to Camp Onondaga, a very old private summer camp in Canada. While there were many prizes from sponsors like Chuck E. Cheese's, Robin Hood Flour, Playmobil, and John Deere, the trip to Walt Disney World was the most desired prize!
