The Story of Justiceburg

How Justiceburg Got Its Name

In 1910, a rancher named Jefferson Davis Justice bought the land. He allowed the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad to build tracks through his property. Because of this important development, LeForrest was renamed Justiceburg in his honor. The railroad was finished in 1911.

Justiceburg's Changing Population

Justiceburg has always been a small village. Its population has changed over the years, usually staying between 25 and 76 people. In the 1980s, many residents were related to Jefferson Davis Justice.

Some people once thought Justiceburg would become a big business center. This never happened, but some still hope it will grow. Even a local TV meteorologist, John Robison, from Lubbock's KCBD, believes Justiceburg could become a "boomtown" someday.

Buildings and Landmarks

The town once had a school and a train station. These buildings are now empty, along with several homes. The church is located on the east side of U.S. Route 84. Most of the other buildings, both used and unused, are on the west side.

Justiceburg has even been featured in a book called "More Ghost Towns of Texas" by T. Lindsay Baker. Many of the old, empty buildings make Justiceburg feel like a ghost town, even though some people still live there.
