Justin Donta Brownlee (born April 23, 1988) is a professional basketball player. He was born in the United States but is now also a Filipino citizen. He plays as a small forward or power forward. Justin is well-known for his time with the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Justin played college basketball for the St. John's Red Storm. After college, he played in the NBA Development League for teams like the Maine Red Claws. In 2016, he joined Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, where he has won many championships. He also played for other teams in different countries, including Mexico, Italy, France, Lebanon, and Indonesia.
In January 2023, Justin became a Filipino citizen. This allowed him to play for the Philippines national basketball team. He helped the team win gold medals at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games and the 2022 Asian Games.

Justin's College Basketball Journey
Justin Brownlee played college basketball at St. John's University from 2009 to 2011. During his time there, he showed great skill on the court.
A Memorable College Game Moment
In 2011, during a game against Rutgers, Justin was involved in a confusing play. With only seconds left, he intercepted a pass and celebrated, thinking the game was over. However, some rules might have been missed by the referees. Despite the confusion, the game ended, and St. John's won.
Justin's Professional Basketball Career
After college, Justin was not chosen in the 2011 NBA draft. However, he quickly started his professional career.
Starting with the Maine Red Claws
Justin began playing professionally with the Maine Red Claws in the NBA Development League. This was his first step into the world of pro basketball.
Time with the New York Knicks
In 2012, Justin joined the New York Knicks for the 2012 NBA Summer League. He also trained with the team in 2013. He signed a contract with them briefly but was later released.
Playing for the Erie BayHawks
In November 2013, Justin joined the Erie Bayhawks. He played well, averaging about 13.85 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He even received an award for his performance in January 2014.
Joining Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (2016–2018)
In 2016, Justin joined Ginebra, a popular team in the Philippines. In his very first game, he scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. He quickly became a key player for the team.
Winning Championships with Ginebra
Justin helped Ginebra win the PBA Governors' Cup in both 2016 and 2017. In the 2016 finals, he made a famous game-winning three-point shot right at the buzzer! In May 2018, he returned to Ginebra after playing for another team.
Playing for San Miguel Alab Pilipinas
Justin also played for San Miguel Alab Pilipinas in the ASEAN Basketball League. With his help, the team won the 2017–18 championship.
Returning to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (2018)
After his time in the ABL, Justin came back to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. He helped the team improve their standing in the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup.
Leading Ginebra to Another Title
Justin played a big role in leading Ginebra to the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals. He averaged impressive points, rebounds, and assists during the playoffs. He won his first "Best Import Award" and helped Ginebra win the championship, making it his third PBA title.
Playing for Mighty Sports-Philippines
In 2019, Justin joined the Mighty Sports-Philippines team for a tournament in Dubai. He played alongside other famous players, including former NBA player Lamar Odom.
Time with Al Riyadi
Before returning to Ginebra, Justin played for Al Riyadi in the Lebanese Basketball League. He joined the team in the middle of their season.
Back with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (2019–2020)
Justin rejoined Ginebra for the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup. In his first game back, he scored 44 points. He continued to have amazing performances, including a career-high 49 points in one game and later 50 points in another!
More Championships with Ginebra
Justin led Ginebra to a sweep in the playoffs against the Magnolia Hotshots. Although they lost in the semifinals of the Commissioner's Cup, he then led his team to another championship in the 2019 Governor's Cup, beating the Meralco Bolts in the Finals.
Playing for Al Sharjah
Justin also played for Al Sharjah in the UAE National Basketball League.
Another Stint with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (2021–2023)
Justin continued to play for Ginebra in the 2021 PBA Governors' Cup. He scored 38 points in one game, moving him up to seventh place on the PBA All-time import scoring list. He helped his team reach the finals again.
Awards and Milestones
On April 13, 2022, Justin won his second "Best Import Award." He also became the first import to make 400 three-pointers in PBA history. By April 2022, he was the fifth-highest scoring import in PBA history.
In November 2022, he achieved his 300th steal, becoming the first PBA import to reach this milestone. In December 2022, he became the fifth import to score 5,000 career points. He won his third "Best Import Award" in January 2023.
On January 15, 2023, Justin won his sixth PBA championship with Ginebra. He tied Sean Chambers for the most titles won by a PBA import and remained undefeated in PBA Finals series.
Recent Games and Challenges
In February 2023, Justin recorded a triple-double (scoring in double digits in three different categories) in a game. He continued to climb the all-time import scoring list. In the 2023 PBA Governors' Cup Finals, Ginebra lost to TNT Tropang Giga.
Justin did not play in the 2023–24 PBA Commissioner's Cup. This was because a test from the 2022 Asian Games showed a banned substance. He chose to sit out to minimize any possible penalties.
Playing for Pelita Jaya (2024)
In March 2024, Justin signed with Pelita Jaya in the Indonesian Basketball League. He helped his team win the 2024 IBL season championship.
Back with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (2024–present)
Justin returned to Barangay Ginebra for the 2024 PBA Governors' Cup. On August 27, 2024, he scored a new career high of 51 points in a victory against the San Miguel Beermen.

Playing for the National Team
In August 2018, Justin shared his wish to become a Filipino citizen. This would allow him to play for the Philippine national basketball team. A bill was passed into law on January 12, 2023, making him a naturalized Filipino citizen.
Debut and Gold Medals
Justin made his debut for the Philippine national team in February 2023. In May 2023, he helped the Philippines win a gold medal at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games. He was a top player in points, rebounds, and assists during the semifinals and the gold medal game.
He also played for the team in the 2022 Asian Games, where they won another gold medal.
Eligibility Update
In February 2024, it was announced that Justin was cleared to play for the national team again. He had faced a temporary period of ineligibility after a test from the 2022 Asian Games showed a banned substance. Since he had not played in any competitive games, his period of ineligibility was applied from November 9, 2023, making him eligible to play again.
