About Justin Maxwell
Early Life and College
Justin Maxwell's father was a dentist in the US Navy. He even worked as the "presidential dentist" for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Justin's mother was also a Navy officer. He grew up in Maryland and South Carolina. He also lived in Japan for four years when his father was stationed there.
After high school, Justin was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2001 MLB Draft. But he decided to go to college instead. He attended the University of Maryland. Playing in the Major Leagues
Washington Nationals
In 2007, Justin played for two minor league teams. He hit well, with 27 home runs and 35 stolen bases. After the minor league season, the Nationals called him up to the major leagues. On September 5, 2007, he played his first MLB game. Six days later, he hit his first career grand slam. A grand slam is a home run hit when all three bases are loaded with runners.
In 2008, Justin missed most of the season. He fractured his wrist while trying to catch a ball. He spent most of 2009 in the minor leagues. But he was called up to the Nationals later that year. On September 30, 2009, he hit a "walk-off" grand slam. This means his home run won the game for his team in the last inning.
Justin continued to play for the Nationals and their minor league team in 2010. He hit another grand slam that year. After the 2010 season, he had Tommy John surgery. This is a type of surgery often done on athletes' elbows.
