She is known for her important discoveries about tin mines in a region called Anatolia during the Bronze Age. Her work helped scientists find a new possible source for this important metal, which was very useful in ancient times.

Becoming an Archaeologist

Aslıhan Yener was born in Istanbul, Turkey. When she was just six months old, her family moved to the United States, to New Rochelle, New York.

In 1964, she started college at Adelphi University in New York, planning to study chemistry. But soon after, she visited her home country, Turkey. This trip changed her mind! In 1966, she transferred to Robert College in Istanbul. There, she studied subjects like history and literature, which are part of "the humanities."

While studying ancient Roman ruins in Turkey, she became very interested in even older, "prehistoric" times at these sites. This sparked her passion for archaeology!

After finishing Robert College in 1969, she went to graduate school. She chose to major in archaeology, which is the study of human history through digging up old things. She earned her highest degree, a PhD, from Columbia University in New York in 1980.

From 1980 to 1988, she was a history professor at Boğaziçi University in Turkey. Later, she became a professor of Anatolian Archaeology at Koç University. She also worked as a professor at the University of Chicago, Oriental Institute.

Today, she is an emeritus associate professor at the University of Chicago. This means she has retired but still keeps her title because of her important work.

Her Book
