K. S. Sethumadhavan (born May 29, 1927 – died December 24, 2021) was a famous Indian film director and writer. He made many movies, mostly in Malayalam cinema. He also directed films in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages.

Starting in the early 1960s, he directed over 60 films. Many of these are considered very important in Malayalam film history. Some of his well-known movies include Odayil Ninnu, Yakshi, Kadalpalam, and Oppol.

He won many important awards for his work. These include ten National Film Awards and nine Kerala State Film Awards. Four of his Kerala State Film Awards were for Best Direction. In 2009, he received the J. C. Daniel Award. This is the highest honor given by the Government of Kerala for contributions to Malayalam cinema.

His Early Life and Film Journey

K. S. Sethumadhavan was born in Palakkad, India, on May 29, 1927. His parents were Subrahmanyam and Lakshmiyamma. He grew up with three sisters and one brother. He spent his childhood in Palakkad and also in North Arcot, Tamil Nadu. He studied biology at Government Victoria College, Palakkad.

He started his career in the film industry as an assistant director. His first job was helping director K. Ramnath. Later, he also assisted other famous directors like L. V. Prasad.

Sethumadhavan directed his first independent film, Veeravijaya, in 1960. This movie was in the Sinhala language. His first film in Malayalam was Gnana Sundari. It was based on a short story by Muttathu Varkey. After that, he went on to direct more than 60 films.

Winning Awards and Recognition

Sethumadhavan's films received many special honors. His movie Achanum Bappayum won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration in 1973. This award is part of the National Film Awards. It celebrates films that promote unity in the country.

His Tamil film Marupakkam won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1991. This was a big achievement. It was the first Tamil film to win this top national award. Later, Kanchivaram also won it in 2007.

In 1996, his Telugu film Stri also won a National Film Award. This one was for the Best Feature Film in Telugu. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Director four times. These were for his films Ara Nazhika Neram (1970), Karakanakkadal (1971), Pani Theeratha Veedu (1972), and Oppol (1980).

He was also asked to be a judge for film awards. He was a jury member for the National Film Awards in 1975 and 1980. In 1982, he was the chairman of the jury for the Kerala State Film Awards. He was also the chairman of the National Film Awards jury in 2002.

In 2009, he received the J. C. Daniel Award. This award honors his great work and contributions to Malayalam Cinema. In 2011, he was given the Chalachitra Ratnam Award. This award came from the Kerala Film Critics Association.

His son, Santosh Sethumadhavan, is also a filmmaker. Santosh remade his father's 1974 film Chattakkari in 2012.

K. S. Sethumadhavan passed away at his home in Chennai on December 24, 2021. He was 94 years old.
