History of KADA-FM
This radio station got its first permission to build from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 20, 1979. The FCC is a government group that manages radio and TV stations. The new station was given the special letters KASX to identify it on October 22, 1979. KASX then received its official permission to start broadcasting on June 2, 1980.
Early Years: KASX (1979-1987)
During the 1980s, KASX-FM played country music. It was also known for broadcasting Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 in the Ardmore area. This was a popular countdown show that played the top songs of the week.
In July 1987, the company that owned KASX, Ada Broadcasting, Inc., agreed to sell the station. It was sold to DeBrine Communications, Inc. The FCC approved this sale on September 9, 1987, and the deal was completed on September 17, 1987. The new owners asked the FCC to change the station's special letters to KFIX on November 1, 1987.
Changes in Ownership and Name: KFIX and KADA-FM (1987-1996)
This ownership change was short-lived. In April 1988, DeBrine Communications, Inc. announced they would sell KFIX to Pontotoc County Broadcasting, Inc. The FCC approved this sale on July 14, 1988, and the deal was completed on July 18, 1988. The station's special letters were changed again to KADA-FM on August 1, 1988.
Current Ownership: Chickasaw Nation (1996-Present)
In March 1996, Pontotoc County Broadcasting, Inc. agreed to sell KADA-FM to the Chickasaw Nation. The Chickasaw Nation is a Native American tribe. The FCC approved this sale on May 30, 1996, and the deal was completed on August 9, 1996. The Chickasaw Nation has owned KADA-FM ever since.
