Calligra Stage is a free computer program used to create presentations, like the slideshows you might make for a school project. It used to be called KPresenter. It is part of the Calligra Suite, a collection of office software made by the KDE community.

With Calligra Stage, you can make cool presentations with text, images, and effects. It saves files in the OpenDocument format, which is a free and open standard. You can also open and work with presentations made in other popular programs like Microsoft PowerPoint and LibreOffice Impress.

The Story of Calligra Stage

Calligra Stage wasn't always its name. It started out as a program called KPresenter and was part of a software collection called KOffice. Over the years, it changed and grew into the program we know today.

Its Early Days as KPresenter

A developer named Reginald Stadlbauer started making KPresenter way back in 1997. It was first released to the public in October 2000 as part of the K Desktop Environment 2.0. For the next several years, the KOffice team released many new versions with improvements.

A big change happened around 2009 with the release of KOffice 2.0. The team updated the software to use new technology from the KDE Software Compilation 4. However, this first version was mostly for developers to test because it was missing some features that users loved from the older versions.

A special version of KOffice for smartphones was created, but later discontinued.

In 2010, the team released version 2.2.0, which added many new features and fixed bugs. It could even open files from newer versions of Microsoft Office.

Around this time, there was a disagreement among the developers. The main developer of KWord, the word processor in KOffice, decided to create his own version of the software. This led to KPresenter being renamed Calligra Stage and becoming part of the new Calligra Suite.

A New Name: Calligra Stage

After the split, the Calligra team worked hard on the new suite. The first version of Calligra Suite was released on April 11, 2012. It included the newly named Calligra Stage.

The team also wanted to make the software work on different devices, not just desktop computers. This led to some exciting new versions.

Versions for Phones and Tablets

The Calligra team created special versions for mobile devices with touchscreens.

  • Calligra Mobile: This was a version for smartphones. The phone company Nokia even helped create a user-friendly version for its Nokia N9 phone.
  • Calligra Active: This version was made for tablet computers. It had a similar look to Calligra Mobile but was designed for a larger screen.

Calligra Gemini for 2-in-1 Laptops

In 2014, a new version called Calligra Gemini was announced. This was made for "2-in-1" laptops, which can work as both a laptop and a tablet.

Calligra Gemini was special because you could switch between a normal desktop view (for a mouse and keyboard) and a touch-friendly view (for a touchscreen) at any time. This made it easy to use no matter how you were using your device.
