On August 17, 1854, a group of white settlers attacked a village belonging to the Winnemem Wintu people. This village was located near Kabyai Creek on the McCloud River. During this attack, 42 Winnemem Wintu people were killed. This included men, women, and children.
Where Did It Happen?
The village site is in Shasta County, California. It is right on the McCloud River, where Kabyai Creek flows into it. The site is across the river from the McCloud Bridge Campground. This area is part of the beautiful Shasta–Trinity National Forest.
Why Is This Place Important Today?
The village site at Kabyai Creek is very important to the Winnemem Wintu people. It is one of their sacred places. Today, this historical site is in danger. There are plans to make Shasta Dam taller. If this happens, the water level of Shasta Lake would rise. This would cause the ancient village site to be covered by water.
