Kahshe Lake is a beautiful lake located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada. It's quite close to the town of Gravenhurst.
This lake is the fourth largest in the Muskoka area. It's home to about 600 cottages, making it a popular spot for vacations. The water in Kahshe Lake has a unique tea-like color. This is because it contains a lot of natural plant material called dissolved organics.
What's in a Name?
The name Kahshe comes from a First Nations term, Ka-shesheb-agam-ag. This long word might mean "where there are ducks-lake-place." So, it could mean "Lake of Many Ducks." This idea comes from the Ojibwe word jishib, which means 'duck'.
Other people have different ideas about the name. Some believe it means "Lake of Many Islands." Another popular idea is that it means "Lake of Healing Waters."
Exploring Kahshe Lake
Kahshe Lake has different depths depending on where you are. The west side of the lake is quite shallow. However, the east side is much deeper. Both sides have many shallow rocks that can be tricky for boats. There are no marker buoys to show where these rocks are, so boaters need to be careful.
You can find a public beach at Kahshe Lake. There are also boating docks and a boat launch. These are all located off North Kahshe Lake Road, making it easy to access the water.
Fun Events at the Lake
Kahshe Lake is a lively place with many fun activities. It has even been shown on fishing television shows! You might have also seen it in a Tim Hortons television commercial.
For over fifty years, residents have held the Kahshe Lake regatta. This is a fun boat race event. The lake also hosts exciting barn dances and a special concert on Labour Day. If you like crafts, you can visit the Rockhaven Inn craft sale. Another cool event is the bi-yearly Muskoka Seaflea Fleafest.
