Kaiika is an ancient type of penguin that is now extinct. Its name comes from the Māori language, meaning "eater of fish." This penguin lived a very long time ago, during the Early Eocene period.

Scientists only know about Kaiika from a single humerus, which is an arm bone. This special bone was found in 1998 by Dr. Phillip Maxwell. He is a paleontologist, a scientist who studies fossils.

Discovering Kaiika

The fossil bone was found in New Zealand, in a place called South Canterbury. It was hidden in rocks from the Kauru Formation, near the Waihao River. This area is part of the Canterbury Basin, a large geological region.

Scientists Ewan Fordyce and Daniel Thomas officially named Kaiika in 2011. They also named the specific type of Kaiika as Kaiika maxwelli, in honor of Dr. Maxwell who found the fossil.

Why Kaiika is Special

Kaiika is very important because it is one of the oldest penguins ever discovered. Finding its fossil helps scientists learn more about how penguins first evolved. It gives clues about what early penguins looked like and where they lived.

Studying ancient penguins like Kaiika helps us understand the history of life on Earth. It shows how animals have changed over millions of years.
