The Kakisa River: A Journey Through Canada
The Kakisa River starts its journey in northern Alberta. It begins from a place called Creighton Lake. This starting point is about 570 meters (1,870 feet) above sea level.
The River's Path
From Creighton Lake, the river first flows west. It briefly crosses into the Northwest Territories before going back into Alberta. Then, about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) east of the British Columbia border, it turns north. It flows back into the Northwest Territories.
The river generally keeps flowing north or northeast. For a while, it runs alongside another river called the Redknife River. Later, it turns east and forms a group of lakes and channels. This complex system then empties into Tathlina Lake.
Lakes and Falls Along the Way
The Kakisa River flows out of the north side of Tathlina Lake. It continues north and receives water from Gull Creek. After this, it flows into Kakisa Lake on its southern shore.
The river then leaves Kakisa Lake from its eastern side. It drops down through the beautiful Lady Evelyn Falls. Right after the falls, the river flows under the Mackenzie Highway. It keeps going northwards. Finally, the Kakisa River empties into the mighty Mackenzie River. This meeting point is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) downstream from the Great Slave Lake. Here, the river is about 160 meters (520 feet) above sea level.
What Feeds the River?
Several bodies of water add to the flow of the Kakisa River. These are known as its tributaries.
