Kaoru Yosano's Political Journey
Kaoru Yosano was born in Tokyo in 1938. His grandparents were famous poets. He studied at the University of Tokyo and finished his studies in 1963.
He first tried to become a member of the House of Representatives in 1972 but was not elected. After that, he worked as a secretary for another politician, Yasuhiro Nakasone. In 1976, he ran for election again and this time he won, becoming a member of parliament.
Important Government Roles
On August 27, 2007, Yosano was chosen to be the Chief Cabinet Secretary for Prime Minister Shinzō Abe. This is a very important job, like being the top assistant to the Prime Minister. He held this role for about a month.
Later, on August 1, 2008, he became the Minister of Economic and Fiscal Policy. This role involved managing Japan's economy and financial plans.
In February 2009, he took on an even bigger role as the Minister of Finance. In this job, he was in charge of all of Japan's money matters and financial services.
Changes in Political Parties
In 2010, Kaoru Yosano decided to leave the Liberal Democratic Party. He helped start a new political party called the Sunrise Party of Japan. However, he left the Sunrise Party in 2011 to join the cabinet of Prime Minister Naoto Kan. He again became the Minister of Economic and Fiscal Policy.
Yosano was well-known for believing that Japan needed to increase its consumption tax (a tax on things people buy) to help pay off the country's debt. He worked on plans for this tax increase, which became law in 2012.
