Karel Dujardin (born September 27, 1626 – died November 20, 1678) was an important Dutch Golden Age painter. He is best known for his small paintings of Italian-style landscapes. These often featured animals and everyday people. He also painted some portraits and religious scenes. Dujardin spent two long periods of his life in Italy. Because of this, most of his paintings and etchings show Italian places or have an Italian feel.

About Karel Dujardin

Karel Dujardin was a Dutch painter and etcher. He was born in Amsterdam in 1626. A good example of his landscape art is Farm Animals in the Shade of a Tree, painted in 1656. This painting can be seen at the National Gallery in London. Dujardin passed away in Venice in 1678.

Early Life and Art Training

It is believed that Dujardin learned painting from another artist named Nicolaes Berchem. When he was young, Dujardin traveled to Italy. In Rome, he joined a group of Dutch and Flemish painters called the Bentvueghels. This group was known for its fun gatherings. In the group, Dujardin was given the nickname "Barba di Becco", which means "goat-beard," or Bokkebaart. It was in Rome that he first became successful as an artist.

Travels and Later Life

According to old stories, Dujardin faced some money problems while in Lyon, France. To solve these debts, he married his landlady, who was older than him. He then returned to Amsterdam with her. His paintings were very popular and valuable there.

In 1675, Dujardin went back to Rome. A friend named Joan Reynst invited him. His old friends and fans were very happy to see him. Reynst and Dujardin went on a "Grand Tour" to visit other Italian cities. When Reynst returned to Amsterdam, Dujardin decided to stay in Italy. He sent a message to his wife, saying he would follow soon.

Dujardin then traveled to Venice. Sadly, he died there unexpectedly in 1678. His friend Reynst said that Dujardin had told him, "Why should I be in a hurry to go back? I am where I want to be." Another friend, Johannes Glauber, said that Dujardin was painting for a Dutch merchant in Venice when he suddenly became ill. He seemed to get better, but then he died. Even though he was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church, he was buried in the Catholic way. His friends Govert van der Leeuw and Glauber carried him to his grave.

Students of Dujardin

Karel Dujardin also taught painting to others. Some of his students included Jacob II (son of Jacob van der Does), Martinus Laeckman, and Erick van den Weerelt.
