Karl Abraham was an important German doctor who studied the human mind. He was born on May 3, 1877, and passed away on December 25, 1925. He worked closely with Sigmund Freud, who was a very famous thinker. Freud even called Abraham his "best pupil."
Life Story of Karl Abraham
Karl Abraham was born in a city called Bremen in Germany. His father, Nathan Abraham, was a teacher of the Jewish religion. His mother was Ida.
Karl studied medicine to become a doctor. After his studies, he got a job at the Burghölzli Swiss Mental Hospital. This hospital was a place where doctors helped people with mental health issues. There, he met Carl Gustav Jung, another famous doctor. This is where Karl Abraham first learned about psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is a way of understanding how our unconscious thoughts and feelings affect our behavior.
Working with Others
In 1907, Karl Abraham first met Sigmund Freud. They became close friends and worked together for the rest of Abraham's life.
Later, Karl Abraham went back to Germany. In 1910, he started a group called the Berliner Society of Psychoanalysis. He was also the president of a big international group called the International Psychoanalytical Association. He held this job from 1914 to 1918, and again in 1925.
Karl Abraham and Freud worked together to understand manic-depressive illness. This is a type of mood disorder where people have big changes in their feelings. Their work helped Freud write an important paper in 1917.
Abraham also helped many other psychoanalysts. He was a therapist for Melanie Klein from 1924 to 1925. He also helped other British psychoanalysts like Edward Glover and Alix Strachey. He was a guide for many German analysts, including Karen Horney, Helene Deutsch, and Franz Alexander.
Karl Abraham was also interested in different cultures. He looked at old stories and myths, suggesting they were like dreams. In 1912, he wrote about the spiritual ideas of an ancient Egyptian king named Amenhotep IV. This king believed in only one god.
His Passing
Karl Abraham died too soon on December 25, 1925. He had problems from a lung infection. Doctors think he might have also had lung cancer.
