Playing for Clubs
Early Days and First Steps
Karl Allgöwer grew up in a town called Geislingen an der Steige. He started playing football in youth teams like SV Altenstadt and SC Geislingen. Later, he moved to Stuttgart to play for Stuttgarter Kickers. From 1977 to 1980, he was a striker for them. He scored an amazing 59 goals in the 2. Bundesliga, which is the second division of German football.
Joining VfB Stuttgart
In 1980, VfB Stuttgart, a bigger club and local rival, paid a lot of money to bring him to their team. He joined their Bundesliga squad. Karl quickly showed how good he was. After just a few matches, he was chosen to play for Germany's B-international team. He impressed everyone as a midfielder who could score goals.
Playing for Germany
His great progress led to a call-up for the main German team. In November 1980, he made his debut against France. He played well on the right side of midfield. Karl was expected to play in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. However, he decided to stop playing for West Germany before that tournament.
Return to the National Team
Karl Allgöwer stopped playing for the national team for three years. During this time, he became even more important for VfB Stuttgart. He helped his club win the Bundesliga title in 1984. Franz Beckenbauer, who became the coach of the German team in 1984, wanted Karl to return. Karl finally came back in October 1985 for a World Cup qualifying match. This game was against Portugal and took place at VfB Stuttgart's home stadium. He continued to play for West Germany after that. He decided to stop playing for the national team for good after the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Germany finished second in that tournament, but Karl did not play in any matches. He played a total of 10 games for West Germany.
Key Player for Stuttgart
At his club, VfB Stuttgart, Karl remained a very important player. Later in his career, he even changed his position to play as a sweeper. A sweeper is a defender who plays behind the main defensive line. Karl's brother, Ralf Allgöwer, also played a few matches for Stuttgart. However, Karl was much more famous and important to the team and its fans. In 1989, Karl was part of the Stuttgart team that played in the UEFA Cup final. They lost to Diego Maradona's SSC Napoli team. Karl Allgöwer played 338 matches in the Bundesliga. He said goodbye to Germany's top division in the summer of 1991.
