The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is a large cooperative dairy company from Karnataka, India. It sells many products like milk, curds, ghee, butter, ice cream, chocolates, and sweets. All these products are sold under the popular brand name Nandini.
KMF is special because it's a federation of milk producers. This means it's owned by the farmers who produce the milk, with support from the Ministry of Cooperation in Karnataka. Farmers who are members collect milk, which is then processed and sold in the market. KMF is the second-largest milk cooperative in India, right after Amul.

How KMF Started
The first dairy cooperative that later became part of KMF began in 1955 in Kudige, Kodagu District. KMF itself was officially founded in 1974. Back then, it was called the Karnataka Dairy Development Corporation (KDDC). It was set up to manage a big dairy development project supported by the World Bank.
In 1984, the organization changed its name to KMF. Today, KMF has 14 milk unions across Karnataka. These unions collect milk from many small Primary Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS). They then deliver milk to people in cities and villages all over Karnataka. KMF has about 1,500 members.
Nandini's Reach and Ambassadors
Sometimes, there are discussions about how KMF operates, especially regarding milk prices or competition. For example, in May 2023, there was a lot of talk and some protests in Karnataka. People were concerned about another dairy brand, Amul, selling its products in the state. Many people showed their support for Nandini using hashtags like #SaveNandini and #GoBackAmul on social media and by protesting in the streets. This showed how much people care about their local brand.

Famous actors have also helped promote Nandini products. The legendary actor Dr. Rajkumar was the first ambassador for Nandini. He even did his first and last ever television commercial for them in 1996, without charging any fee. Later, his son, Puneeth Rajkumar, also became an ambassador for Nandini products in December 2009, also without taking any payment. In 2014, actress Shriya Saran became the ambassador for Nandini Good Life products in other states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Nandini products are also available in states like Maharashtra and Goa.
