The Karshner Mound is a large Native American mound located in southeastern Ohio, in the United States. It is found near the small village of Laurelville in Hocking County. This mound is special because it is one of Ohio's biggest burial mounds that has stayed mostly undamaged since settlers arrived.

The mound is about 100 feet (30 m) wide and 28 feet (8.5 m) tall. It sits in the middle of a farm field. However, the field around it has never been plowed. Plants growing on the mound have also helped protect it from wearing away over time.

Who Built the Karshner Mound?

No one has ever dug into the Karshner Mound to study it closely. But experts believe it was built by people from the Adena culture. The Adena people lived in this area a very long time ago, between 1000 BC and AD 400.

Scientists think the Adena built it because of its shape and where it is located. The Karshner Mound sits on a raised area near Salt Creek. Many other mounds found on similar raised spots near small streams were built by the Adena.

Why is the Mound Important?

Because it is believed to be an Adena mound, the Karshner Mound is considered a very important archaeological site. This means it is a place where old objects and information about past human life might be found. If archaeologists were to dig here, they would likely discover many interesting ancient items.

To recognize its historical and archaeological value, the Karshner Mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This is a list of places in the U.S. that are important to history or culture.
