Kate Maree Gynther (born 5 July 1982) is an Australian former water polo player. She played for the Brisbane Barracudas in Australia's top water polo league. Kate represented Australia at three Olympic Games. She won bronze medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Kate is known as a top goalscorer in Olympic water polo history. She scored 30 goals during her Olympic career. She was also a leading sprinter, winning 21 sprints at the 2012 Olympics alone. Overall, she won 39 sprints in Olympic water polo. She also earned a bronze medal at the 2005 FINA World League Super Finals.

About Kate Gynther

Kate Gynther was born in July 1982 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She has two step-sisters, Rebecca Rippon and Melissa Rippon. Both of her step-sisters also played for the Australian women's national water polo team. Kate's mother married in 2002, which is when the Rippon sisters became her step-sisters. Kate and Melissa became very close friends after their parents married.

Outside of water polo, Kate Gynther is also a police officer. She serves with the Queensland Police Service.

Kate's Water Polo Journey

Kate Gynther received a special scholarship for water polo. This scholarship was from the Australian Institute of Sport. This helped her train and develop her skills.

Kate played club water polo for the Brisbane Barracudas. This team competes in the National Water Polo League. She was a key player for the Barracudas in 2008, 2011, and 2012. The games between the Barracudas and their rivals, the Breakers, were always exciting.

In 2011, Kate helped her team win the league championship. This was their third championship win in a row! The final game was very close. It ended in a shootout after extra time. Kate was named the "female player of the finals series" for her amazing performance.

Playing for the National Team

Kate Gynther proudly represented Australia on the national water polo team. She competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2005, she played at the World Championships in Canada. She scored a goal in a semi-final game against the Netherlands.

Also in 2005, Kate helped Australia win a bronze medal. This was at the FINA World League Super Finals in Russia. She was part of the team that qualified for the 2008 Olympics. During a qualifier game against New Zealand, she scored a goal.

Kate was a member of the Australia women's national water polo team that won a bronze medal. This was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Her team played against Hungary for the bronze medal. They had tied with Hungary earlier in the Olympics.

In 2011, Kate was one of five Queensland players chosen for the Australian Stingers. This team competed in the FINA World League in New Zealand. Later that year, she played in the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai.

In January 2012, Kate competed in the 2012 Pan Pacific Water Polo Championships. She scored a goal in a close win against the United States. In February 2012, she was selected for the final training squad for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Kate was part of the Stingers team that played against Great Britain in 2012.

Kate, Melissa, and Rebecca Rippon had hoped to make history. They wanted to be the first set of Australian sisters to compete at three Olympic Games together. However, Rebecca was not selected for the 2012 Olympic team.
