Katherine Day (January 7, 1889 – March 12, 1976) was a talented Canadian artist. She was known for her beautiful prints and paintings.

Early Life and Education

Katherine Day was born in Orillia, Ontario, in 1889. She was a very smart student and earned a university degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), from Queen's University. After finishing her studies, she worked as a social worker, helping people in her community.

Helping During Wartime

During World War I, Katherine Day wanted to help others. She volunteered as a nursing assistant in England. This meant she helped care for sick and injured people during the war.

Becoming an Artist

Katherine Day had a passion for art. She decided to study painting and become a professional artist.

Art School Journey

From 1922 to 1923, she learned painting from a famous artist named Franz Johnston at the Winnipeg School of Art. Later, from 1929 to 1930, she went to the Ontario College of Art.

Katherine didn't stop there! She continued her art education in Europe. She studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, England. Then, she traveled to Paris, France, to learn from artists like Nicolas Eekman and Henri Jannot.

Joining Art Groups

When Katherine Day returned to Canada, she became an important part of the art community. She joined the Canadian Society of Graphic Artists and the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers. These groups were for artists who made prints and etchings. Katherine showed her artwork in exhibitions with both of these groups.

Legacy

Katherine Day passed away in Orillia in 1976, at the age of 87. Her artwork is still celebrated today. One of her special woodcut prints is kept in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, which is a very important art museum in Canada.
