Kathryn Chandria Manuel Bernardo (born on March 26, 1996) is a famous Filipino actress. She started acting when she was a child. She played younger versions of main characters in TV shows like It Might Be You (2003).
Kathryn became very well-known in 2010 with the TV show Mara Clara. Since then, she has become one of the most popular and successful actors in the Philippines. Her movies have earned a lot of money, making her the highest-grossing Filipino movie actress of the 2010s. She is also known as the "Box Office Queen" because two of her films earned over ₱800 million each. Early Life and Education
Kathryn Bernardo was born on March 26, 1996, in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. She is the youngest of four children. Her parents are Luzviminda and Teodore Bernardo.
Her School Journey
Before she started acting in 2003, Kathryn went to Flowerlane Montessori Children's House. Later, she attended OB Montessori Center in Quezon City. Because her acting schedule was very busy, she joined a homeschooling program in 2011. She also started studying marketing at Enderun Colleges. However, she had to pause her college studies because of her TV show Got to Believe. She still hopes to finish her college degree in marketing or communication arts.
Her Acting Career
Starting Out: 2003–2011
Kathryn began her acting journey in 2003. She first appeared as a young character named Cielo in the ABS-CBN show It Might Be You. In 2006, she got her first main role in the TV series Super Inggo, playing Maya. She also appeared in other ABS-CBN shows like Krystala and Vietnam Rose. Later, she joined the popular children's show Goin' Bulilit.
As a child actress, Kathryn played young Victoria in Magkaribal and young Jenny in GMA's Endless Love. Both shows started on the same day in June 2010.
Her big break came with the remake of the 1992 drama Mara Clara. She played the main character, Mara David. This show was a huge success and made her a rising star. After Mara Clara, Kathryn starred in the teen show Growing Up. In this show, she played Ella, a 15-year-old girl living with her single mother.
Kathryn's film career started in 2004 with Gagamboy. But she became more well-known in movies in 2011 with Way Back Home. She starred in this movie with her Mara Clara co-star Julia Montes. In the same year, she was also in the horror film Shake, Rattle & Roll 13. People praised her acting in that movie.
Working with Daniel Padilla: 2012–2022
After the success of Mara Clara, Kathryn became even more famous in the popular TV series Princess and I. She starred alongside her Growing Up co-star Daniel Padilla and Enrique Gil. Kathryn played the main role of Mikay, who was also Princess Areeyah. This show was special because it was the first Philippine show filmed in Bhutan. It was praised for its grand production. Later that year, Kathryn and Daniel were in the romantic-comedy film 24/7 in Love. They also appeared in the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival movie Sisterakas with Vice Ganda.
Kathryn and Daniel became a popular acting pair, known as KathNiel. Their first movie together as the main stars was the romantic comedy Must Be... Love, released in March 2013. In August of that year, they starred in the TV series Got to Believe, which had high ratings throughout its run. In December, they were in the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival movie Pagpag. They continued to work together in the successful film She's Dating the Gangster in July 2014. This movie was one of the highest-earning films that year. By December, Kathryn and Daniel received stars on the Eastwood Walk of Fame in Quezon City. This honored their contributions to Philippine entertainment.
Over the years, Kathryn and Daniel worked on many successful films and TV series. They starred in the 2015 film Crazy Beautiful You. Then came the 2016 film Barcelona: A Love Untold, which was the second highest-earning film that year. Kathryn won her first "Box Office Queen" award for Barcelona: A Love Untold in 2017. Their partnership continued in 2017 with Can't Help Falling in Love. All these movies earned a lot of money.
On television, they starred together in the 2015 remake of Pangako Sa 'Yo. They also continued their partnership in the fantasy series La Luna Sangre in 2017.
In 2018, Kathryn made history. She was the first Filipina actress to have a film earn over ₱800 million at the box office with The Hows of Us, which she starred in with Daniel. For her acting, she won her first Best Actress award at the 35th PMPC Star Awards for Movies. She won another Best Actress award in 2019. The next year, she reached this box office milestone again with Hello, Love, Goodbye. This time, she starred with GMA actor Alden Richards. This film became the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time for more than four years (2019-2024). It earned over ₱880 million worldwide. Kathryn received "Phenomenal Box Office Star" awards for The Hows of Us and Hello, Love, Goodbye. She also won Film Actress of the Year for Hello, Love, Goodbye in 2020.
In 2022, Kathryn reunited with Daniel in the TV series 2 Good 2 Be True. This was their last project together. She was also named the "Outstanding Asian Star" at the 18th Seoul International Drama Awards.
Recent Success: 2023–Present
In 2023, Kathryn starred in A Very Good Girl. This was her first solo film in several years. She starred alongside the talented actress Dolly de Leon. Her performance earned her the first FAMAS Best Actress award of her career. She also won the "Box Office Queen" title for the second time in 2024. She also won "Best Actress in a Leading Role" at the 2024 Asian Academy Creative Awards.
Kathryn reunited with Alden Richards after five years in the film Hello, Love, Again. This movie is the sequel to their 2019 hit film Hello, Love, Goodbye.
Personal Life
In April 2024, Kathryn celebrated moving into her new home in Antipolo. Her house has a modern design and artistic touches.
Her Businesses
In 2017, Kathryn started her own nail salon business called KathNails by KCMB. It now has eight branches across the Philippines. In 2022, she opened another nail salon called The Glow Up Lounge, which has five branches nationwide.
She also helped start a boutique hotel called Isla Amara in El Nido, Palawan. She owns this hotel with actor Piolo Pascual and other partners.
