Katherine Whitton Baker (born June 8, 1950), known as Kathy Baker, is an American actress. She started her acting journey in theater. Her first movie role was in the 1983 drama film The Right Stuff.
Kathy Baker has appeared in over 50 films. Some of her well-known movies include Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Saving Mr. Banks (2013). On television, she played Dr. Jill Brock in the CBS series Picket Fences from 1992 to 1996. For this role, she won three Emmy Awards. She also won a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Early Life and Education
Kathy Baker was born in Midland, Texas. She grew up in New Mexico in a Quaker family. Her father was a geologist and a teacher. Her mother, Helene Andree, was from France.
Kathy went to Mills High School in Millbrae, California. She finished high school in 1968. Her drama teacher, Allen Knight, really inspired her to become an actress. She studied acting at the Boston University School of Fine Arts. She also attended the California Institute of the Arts in the early 1970s. Later, in 1977, she earned a degree in French from UC Berkeley.
Acting Career Highlights
Kathy Baker began her acting career in San Francisco. She performed in plays at the Magic Theatre. She got her big break in an off-Broadway play called Fool for Love in 1983. She won an Obie Award for her performance in this play.
In the same year, she played Louise Shepard in the movie The Right Stuff. This film was about the early days of the American space program. She also gave strong performances in movies like Street Smart (1987). For Street Smart, she won awards from film critics. She was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Later, she appeared in films such as Dad, Jacknife, and Edward Scissorhands.
From 1992 to 1996, Kathy Baker starred in the TV series Picket Fences. She played Jill Brock, a doctor in a small town. This show was very popular and received good reviews. For her work on Picket Fences, she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series three times. She won in 1993, 1995, and 1996. She also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama in 1994. In 1995, she received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.
After Picket Fences, she appeared in other TV dramas. These included Ally McBeal and The Practice. She also had a regular role in Boston Public. For her role in Boston Public, she was nominated for another Emmy Award in 2001. She also received Emmy nominations for her guest roles in Touched by an Angel and for the TV movie Door to Door.
Kathy Baker has acted in more than 50 movies. She appeared in The Cider House Rules (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003). Other notable films include 13 Going on 30 (2004) and Saving Mr. Banks (2013). She also starred with Tom Selleck in the Jesse Stone TV movie series. On television, she has made guest appearances on shows like Grey's Anatomy and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Kathy Baker lives in Southern California. She is married to director and producer Steven Robman. They got married in 2003. She has a son and a daughter from her first marriage to Donald Camillieri.
