Katie Marie Harman Ebner (born August 18, 1980) is an American singer and actress. She is famous for winning the Miss America pageant in 2002. Before that, she won the Miss Oregon title in 2001. Katie is the only person from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States to become Miss America.

After her time as Miss America, Katie Harman has continued to perform. She has acted in plays and sung in concerts. She even had a guest role on the TV show Big Love in 2010.

Early Life and Education

Katie Harman was born in Portland, Oregon. When she was a child, her family moved to North Carolina. They later returned to Oregon when she was eight years old. They settled in a town called Gresham.

Katie went to Centennial High School in Gresham. She graduated in 1999 and was very active in the school's drama club. After high school, she first attended the University of Puget Sound. Later, she transferred to Portland State University. She earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Portland State.

Becoming Miss America 2002

In 2001, Katie Harman was first chosen as Miss Multnomah County. Then, she won the Miss Oregon pageant. This win allowed her to compete in the Miss America pageant. She was crowned Miss America on the Saturday after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Her first official duties as Miss America were very important. She visited rescue workers at the World Trade Center site and The Pentagon. These visits were requested by journalist Janet Langhart Cohen. Katie wanted to help lift the spirits of the American people during this difficult time. She said, "This is an opportunity for Miss America to rally the hopes of the American public."

Life After Miss America

After her year as Miss America, Katie Harman continued her career in performing arts. She played Kathie in a play called The Student Prince in Florida. She also performed as Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro. As a singer, she has performed with famous pianists like André Watts.

In 2002, Katie appeared as herself on the TV comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?. She also gave a speech at Portland State University's graduation ceremony in 2002. Some students and teachers had questions about a Miss America speaking at their graduation. They wondered if the pageant was fair to women. Katie explained that the Miss America program helps young women find their voice. She said it focuses on a woman's intelligence and passion, not just how she looks.

In 2006 and 2007, Katie acted in a play called "The Secret Garden." In 2007, she released her first music CD, named Soul of Love. This album featured classical music. In 2010, she acted in an episode of the HBO TV series Big Love. She played Miss Provo and sang a song during a campaign event.

Personal Life

Katie Harman married Tim Ebner in 2003. Tim is a pilot for the Oregon Air National Guard. Their first child, a son named Tyler Glen Ebner, was born in 2005. In 2005, Katie moved with her husband and son to Klamath Falls, Oregon. Her husband still works there for the Oregon Air National Guard. In 2009, Katie gave birth to their second child, a daughter.
