Kavumbhagom, also spelled Kavumbhagam, is a village in Kerala, India. It is part of the Thiruvalla area in the Pathanamthitta district. In 2011, about 6,644 people lived here. Kavumbhagom is an important road junction. It connects major towns like Changanasserry, Thiruvalla, Chathenkary, and Mavelikkara. The famous Thiruvalla Sree Vallabha temple is located in Kavumbhagom. The town of Thiruvalla is even named after this temple!

Long ago, Kavumbhagom meant the area around the Karunattu Kaavu temple. It was where the Thiruvalla-Mavelikkara Road met the Kottayam-Mavelikkara Road. Later, a new road was built in the 1980s. This changed the names of some places. The old Kavumbhagom Junction became known as Anchal Kutty. The area once called Erankavu is now known as Kavumbhagom.

A Look at Kavumbhagom's Past

Kavumbhagom was once home to the Kāvil Market. This market was very famous in Kerala. It was even popular for trade with people from other countries. The market was on a street from Erankavu Temple to the Kaavil Temple. Houses on this street are still called "Kāvile Vīdukaḷ," which means "in a Kavu" in Malayalam. Houses in the Pushpagiri-Tholassery area are called "Malayile Vīdukaḷ," meaning "on a hill." This is because they were on higher ground.

Kavumbhagom was also where the first Christians settled in Thiruvalla. This famous street and its people are even mentioned in an old poem called "Unnuneeli Sandesham." Kavumbhagom was the main center of Thiruvalla until the 1800s. The first school in Thiruvalla opened in the mid-1800s. It was in the Kāvil Market area, on the road to Pallippalam.
