The Kaweka Range is a group of mountains located in the Hawke's Bay area of New Zealand. You can find it on the eastern side of the North Island. These mountains are part of a long chain that forms the "backbone" of the North Island. This chain includes other ranges like the Tararua and Ruahine mountains.

Discover the Kaweka Range

The Kaweka Range is a special place for nature and adventure. It stretches for about 14 kilometers (9 miles). This mountain range is known for its rugged beauty and the many rivers that start there.

Where is the Kaweka Range?

The Kaweka Range is located inland from the coast. It sits about 55 kilometers (34 miles) southeast of the city of Napier. To the northwest, it's about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Lake Taupō. Its central location makes it an important part of the region's geography.

Rivers Flowing from the Mountains

Many important rivers begin their journey in the Kaweka Range. These rivers flow down from the mountains and eventually reach Hawke Bay. Some of the main rivers include the Tutaekuri River, the Mohaka River, and the Ngaruroro River. These rivers are important for the local environment and wildlife.

Kaweka J: The Highest Peak

The highest point in the Kaweka Range is a peak called Kaweka J. It stands tall at 1,724 meters (5,656 feet) above sea level. As you go up the mountains, you'll notice a change in the plants. The bush line (or tree line) is where the tall trees stop growing. In the Kaweka Range, this line is usually between 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) and 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) high. Above this line, you'll mostly find smaller plants and grasses.

Fun Activities in the Range

The Kaweka Range is a popular spot for outdoor activities.

Tramping and Hiking

There is a walking track that follows the main ridge of the entire range. This track is great for tramping, which is what New Zealanders call hiking or trekking. It offers amazing views and a chance to explore the natural beauty of the area.

The Kaweka Challenge

Since 1990, a running race called the Kaweka challenge has been held in the range every year. This event tests runners' endurance and skill as they navigate the mountain terrain. It's a challenging but rewarding experience for athletes.
