Kaylia's Early Life
Kaylia Nemour was born in Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt, France. Her mother is French, and her father is Algerian. Her father's family comes from Jijel Province, Algeria. This means Kaylia has dual nationality, being a citizen of both France and Algeria. She grew up following her mother's Catholic faith.
Starting Gymnastics
Kaylia started gymnastics when she was just four years old. She first competed internationally in 2017 at the Tournoi International. There, she placed 16th in the all-around in the "espoir" (hopeful) division. She showed her talent on all four events at the Top 12 Series 2, helping her club win.
In 2018, Kaylia continued to shine. She helped her club, Avoine, win against other teams in the Top 12 Series. At the Top 12 Final, her club won the silver medal. She also finished seventh in the all-around at the 2018 French Championships.
Junior Gymnastics Career
2019 Season
In 2019, Kaylia helped her club Avoine finish second at the Top 12 Finals. At the French Championships, she won the all-around title for her age group. She also got the highest scores on floor exercise and uneven bars, and the third highest on vault.
In September, she competed at the Mediterranean Championships. She helped France win a team bronze medal. Individually, Kaylia won gold in the all-around, on uneven bars, and on balance beam. She also placed fourth on vault and fifth on floor exercise.
Kaylia also competed at the Swiss Cup Juniors, where France's team finished second. She won a silver medal in the all-around. At the Elite Gym Massilia, she placed fifth in the all-around. In the event finals, she won a gold medal on the uneven bars and a bronze on the floor exercise.
2020 and 2021 Seasons
In February 2020, Kaylia helped her club Avoine win another Top 12 Series event. Many competitions were canceled or postponed in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. When she returned to competition in October, she won the junior all-around title at the French Test Meet. She also won the all-around at the Coupe d’Hiver.
In 2021, Kaylia competed at the Top 12 Championships. She had the highest scores on the three events she competed on, helping Avoine win the championship. She then competed at the French Championships, where she won the uneven bars title, even beating senior gymnasts. After this, Kaylia had two surgeries on her knees because of a condition called osteochondritis.
Senior Gymnastics Career
2022 Season
In 2022, Kaylia was old enough to compete as a senior internationally. Even though her own doctor said she was ready to train again after her knee surgeries, the French national team doctor disagreed. The French Gymnastics Federation also wanted her to leave her club and train in Paris. Kaylia did not want to do this.
Because of these disagreements, Kaylia decided to change her nationality to represent Algeria. In July, the International Gymnastics Federation approved her change. However, because the French Federation initially blocked the request, Kaylia could not compete for Algeria in major international events until July 2023.
In October, Kaylia made her debut for Algeria at the Arab Championships. This event was not affected by the ban. There, she helped Algeria win a gold medal in the team competition. She also won gold on the uneven bars and silver on balance beam.
2023 Season
At the start of 2023, Kaylia was still able to compete in French club events. She helped Avoine win several Top 12 Series matchups. At the Top 12 Finals, she scored an amazing 15.350 on the uneven bars, the highest score of the whole competition, helping Avoine win the championship.
In early 2023, many people signed an online petition. They wanted the French Gymnastics Federation to let Kaylia compete for Algeria. This was important because the African Championships were coming up, which was a way to qualify for the 2023 World Championships. In May, a French sports journalist reported on problems within the French Gymnastics Federation. After this report, the federation finally allowed Kaylia to compete for Algeria.
Two weeks later, at the African Championships, Kaylia helped Algeria win a bronze medal as a team. She also won the all-around competition, beating the previous African champion. This win earned her a spot to compete at the World Championships later that year. In September, Kaylia competed at the Paris World Challenge Cup. She won a silver medal on the balance beam and a bronze on the uneven bars.
At the World Championships in Antwerp, Kaylia made history again. She qualified for the uneven bars final in third place and the all-around final. She was the first Algerian gymnast ever to reach a World Championship final! By finishing 13th in the all-around qualification, Kaylia also earned a spot to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In the all-around final, she placed eighth, which was the highest placement for any gymnast from an African country. She scored an amazing 15.200 on the uneven bars in that final. In the uneven bars event final, she won the silver medal, making her the first African gymnast to win a World Championship medal.
After the World Championships, Kaylia won a bronze medal in the all-around at the Arthur Gander Memorial.
2024 Season

Kaylia started 2024 strong by competing at the World Cups in Cottbus, Baku, and Doha. She won gold medals on the uneven bars at all three events! In Baku, she also won a bronze on floor exercise. In Doha, she won silver on balance beam and another gold on floor exercise.
At the Olympic Games in Paris, Kaylia qualified for the uneven bars final in first place. She also made it to the all-around final. In the all-around final, Kaylia scored 55.899 and finished fifth. This was the highest placement for an African gymnast in an Olympic all-around final. Then, in the uneven bars final, Kaylia earned an incredible score of 15.700 to win the gold medal! She became the first gymnast from the African continent to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics, and the first to win any Olympic medal in gymnastics.
