Early Life and Start in Gymnastics
Kaylia Nemour was born in Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt, France. Her mother is French, and her father is Algerian. Her father's family came from Jijel Province, Algeria. This means Kaylia has dual nationality, being a citizen of both France and Algeria. She grew up following her mother's Catholic faith.
Kaylia started gymnastics when she was just four years old. She showed great talent from a young age.
Junior Gymnastics Journey
First Competitions
Kaylia made her first international appearance in 2017 at the Tournoi International. She placed 16th in the all-around in the "espoir" (hopeful) division. She helped her club, Avoine, win against Lyon in a team competition.
In 2018, Kaylia continued to compete for Avoine. She helped her club win against Rouen and Haguenau. At the Top 12 Final, her club won the silver medal. She finished seventh in the all-around at the 2018 French Championships.
Success in 2019
In 2019, Kaylia helped Avoine finish second at the Top 12 Finals. She won the all-around title for her age group at the French Championships. She also had the highest scores on floor exercise and uneven bars.
At the Mediterranean Championships, she helped France win a team bronze medal. Individually, Kaylia won gold in the all-around, on uneven bars, and on balance beam.
Later that year, she helped France win silver as a team at the Swiss Cup Juniors. She also won a silver medal in the all-around. At the Elite Gym Massilia, she placed fifth in the all-around. She won a gold medal on the uneven bars and a bronze on the floor exercise.
Challenges and Comebacks (2020–2021)
In 2020, many competitions were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Kaylia still managed to win the junior all-around title at the French Test Meet. She also won the all-around at the Coupe d’Hiver.
In 2021, Kaylia helped her club, Avoine, win the Top 12 Championships. She also won the uneven bars title at the French Championships. After this, Kaylia had to have two surgeries on her knees. She had a condition called osteochondritis, which affects the bones and cartilage in joints.
Senior Gymnastics Career
Changing Nationalities (2022)
In 2022, Kaylia was old enough to compete as a senior internationally. Even though her own doctor said she was ready to train again after her knee surgeries, the French national team doctor disagreed. The French Gymnastics Federation also wanted her to move to Paris to train under their control. Kaylia did not want to do this.
Because of these disagreements, Kaylia decided to change her nationality to represent Algeria. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) approved her change in July. However, the French Federation blocked her from competing in FIG events until July 2023.
Kaylia still made her debut for Algeria at the 2022 Arab Championships. This event was not blocked by the FIG. She helped Algeria win team gold. She also won gold on uneven bars and silver on balance beam.
Breakthrough Year (2023)
In early 2023, Kaylia competed in French events. She helped Avoine win several team competitions. At the Top 12 Finals, she scored a very high 15.350 on the uneven bars. This helped Avoine win the championship.
An online petition started to help Kaylia compete at the 2023 African Artistic Gymnastics Championships. This competition was important for qualifying for the World Championships. A French sports journalist also wrote a report about issues within the French Gymnastics Federation. Because of this, the federation finally allowed Kaylia to compete for Algeria.
At the African Championships, Kaylia helped Algeria win a team bronze medal. She won the all-around title, which earned her a spot at the World Championships. In September, she won a silver medal on balance beam and a bronze on uneven bars at the Paris World Challenge Cup.
At the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Kaylia made history. She was the first Algerian gymnast to reach a World Championship final. She qualified for the uneven bars final and the all-around final. By finishing 13th in the all-around, she also qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris! In the all-around final, she placed eighth, which was the highest for any African gymnast. In the uneven bars final, she won the silver medal. This was the first World Championship medal for an African gymnast.
Olympic Gold (2024)

Kaylia started 2024 by winning gold on the uneven bars at three World Cup events: Cottbus, Baku, and Doha. She also won a bronze on floor exercise in Baku. In Doha, she won silver on balance beam and another gold on floor exercise.
At the Olympic Games in Paris, Kaylia qualified for the uneven bars final in first place. She also made it to the all-around final. In the all-around final, she finished fifth, which was the highest placement for an African gymnast in an Olympic all-around final.
Then, in the uneven bars final, Kaylia performed incredibly. She won the gold medal! This made her the first gymnast from the African continent to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics. It was also the first Olympic medal of any color for an African gymnast.
Continuing Success (2025)
Kaylia continued her strong performances in 2025. At the International Gymnix competition in Montreal, she won gold in the all-around, on uneven bars, and on balance beam. She also competed at the Cairo World Cup, winning gold on uneven bars and balance beam, and silver on floor exercise. It was announced in May that she was leaving her longtime club, Avoine-Beaumont.

Kaylia Nemour has a gymnastics skill named after her in the official Code of Points. This is a huge honor! The skill is on the uneven bars and is often called the "inbar Nabieva." She first performed this difficult move at the 2023 African Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
