Keene is a small city in Jessamine County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is known as a home rule-class city. This means it has the power to manage its own local affairs. Keene is also home to the historic Keene Springs Hotel.

History of Keene
How Keene Started
Keene began around a stone mill built in 1794. At first, it was called North Liberty in 1813. But in 1830, the first postmaster, Ephraim Carter, changed the name. He named the new post office after Keene, New Hampshire. This was his hometown, and also the hometown of a local store owner, Harvey Huggins.
Becoming a City
The area officially became a city in 1844. This was decided by the state government of Kentucky. For a while, Keene was also known by the nickname "Hard Scrabble."
Keene Industrial Institute
In the early 1900s, Keene had a special school. It was called the Keene Industrial Institute. This school was for African American students. It taught them useful skills for work.
Where is Keene?
Keene is located in the northwestern part of Jessamine County. It is about 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Lexington, Kentucky. It is also about 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Nicholasville, Kentucky. Nicholasville is the main town of Jessamine County. Keene sits on the north side of a valley. This valley has a small stream that flows into Clear Creek, which then joins the Kentucky River.
