Kent is a small community in Indiana, United States. It is located in Jefferson County. Even though it is not a big city, it is officially recognized as a "census-designated place" (CDP). A Look Back: Kent's History
Kent was planned and laid out in 1853. It was named after a famous judge from New York named James Kent. A jurist is a person who studies or practices law. For many years, Kent had its own post office. However, in 1965, the post office closed down.

Kent is located in the western part of Jefferson County, Indiana. It is in the northeast area of Republican Township. A road called Indiana State Road 256 goes right through the community.
This road leads east about 8 miles (13 km) to Madison. Madison is the main city and the county seat of Jefferson County. The road also goes west about 14 miles (23 km) to Austin.

The community sits on the east side of a stream called Little Creek. Little Creek flows north and joins Big Creek. Big Creek is a larger stream that flows northwest into the Muscatatuck River. The Muscatatuck River is part of the White River system. This means all the water from these creeks eventually flows into the White River.
