Kenyatta J. Johnson, born on October 30, 1973, is an American politician. He has been the president of the Philadelphia City Council since 2024. As a member of the Democratic Party, he has represented the second district on the Council since 2012. His district includes parts of Center City, South, and Southwest Philadelphia.
Before joining the City Council, Johnson was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He represented the 186th district from 2009 to 2012.

His Early Life and School
Kenyatta Johnson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His birthday is October 30, 1973. His parents are Gregory White and Yvonne Martin. He went to Edward Bok High School and finished in 1991.
He continued his studies at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. In 1996, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice. Later, in 2001, he received a Master of Government Administration. He got this degree from the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania.
His Journey in Politics
Johnson started a group called Peace Not Guns. He did this after his cousin was sadly murdered. Since 1998, he has worked to stop gun violence. He creates programs and education to help kids. These programs offer good choices instead of dangerous street activities.
Working for the Community
His work in the community led him to run for office. He successfully ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He served as a State Representative for the 186th Legislative District. This was from 2009 until 2012. In 2012, he became a member of the City Council. Before that, he worked for State Senator Anthony H. Williams for six years.
Johnson also volunteered for AmeriCorps. This is a national service group where people help their communities. He was also a first staff member for City Year. This is a non-profit group that helps build community service.
Becoming City Council President
In 2015, Johnson ran for re-election. It was a very close and tough primary election. He won against a real estate developer named Ori Feibush.
On January 2, 2024, Johnson was elected president of the Philadelphia City Council. He took over from Darrell L. Clarke. Clarke had been president since 2012 and then retired.
His Family Life
Kenyatta Johnson is married to Dawn Chavous. They got married in 2012. Dawn Chavous is a political consultant. She used to be the chief of staff for State Senator Anthony H. Williams. She also managed his campaign for governor in 2010.
