Keppoch (which was once called Cockatoo Lake and Keppach) is a small place in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located in the south-east part of the state, within the beautiful Limestone Coast region. Keppoch is about 269 kilometers (167 miles) south-east of Adelaide, which is the capital city of South Australia. It is also about 29 kilometers (18 miles) north-west of the town of Naracoorte.

The Story of Keppoch

How Keppoch Got Its Name

Keppoch started as a planned town way back in 1870. It was first going to be named Cockatoo Lake. However, Governor Fergusson decided to name it 'Keppoch'. This name came from a village in Argyll, Scotland.

For some time, the name was accidentally spelled 'Keppach'. In 1938, the name was officially changed back to 'Keppoch'. This change happened because the original Scottish name was spelled that way.

Keppoch's School Days

There was a school in Keppoch that first opened with the 'Keppach' spelling. In 1942, its name was also changed to 'Keppoch'. The school stayed open until 1951, when it closed down.

Modern Keppoch Boundaries

New boundaries for the area were created in April 2001. These boundaries include the original area of the government town of Keppoch.

What Happens in Keppoch?

Most of the land in Keppoch is used for primary production. This means that people use the land for farming, like growing crops or raising animals.

Protecting Nature

A special area of land at the western end of Keppoch was set aside in 1977. This area is known as the Talapar Conservation Park. A conservation park is a protected area where nature and wildlife are kept safe.

How Keppoch is Governed

Keppoch is part of different government areas. These areas help manage and represent the people living there.
