The Story of Keventers
Keventers Milkshake was started in 1925 by Edward Keventer. He was a Danish expert in dairy products. The British Government asked him to help improve India's dairy industry in 1889. Keventer moved to India that year. In 1894, he bought a struggling dairy farm in Aligarh. He made it successful and profitable.
In 1925, Keventer opened another dairy farm in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Within ten years, he had opened Keventers plants in Delhi, Aligarh, Calcutta, and Darjeeling.
New Ownership and Growth
Edward Keventer passed away in 1937. In 1940, Ram Krishna Dalmia, a businessman who distributed Keventers products, bought the brand. Dalmia expanded the company. He started making powdered milk, condensed milk, milkshakes, and ice creams. The company grew to have 48 distribution points around Delhi. Keventers also supplied milk, powdered milk, condensed milk, and biscuits to the Indian Army for many years until the 1970s.
A Temporary Pause
In the 1970s, the main Keventers plant in Chanakyapuri had to close. The Indian government needed the land for other developments. After this, Dalmia became interested in other businesses. He focused less on the Keventers brand. However, a few Keventers shops continued to operate, run by some of its loyal distributors.
Keventers Today
Today, Super Milk Products Private Limited, based in New Delhi, owns Keventers. This company also makes other dairy products. Keventers is well-known for its classic and special milkshakes. Many customers love their unique glass milkshake bottles. These bottles have a foil top and a vintage look. Customers can even take the bottles home with them!
Bringing the Brand Back
In 2014, Agastya Dalmia, who is Ram Krishna Dalmia's grandson, decided to bring the brand back. He teamed up with his friend Aman Arora. They even used some old milkshake recipes that Ram Krishna Dalmia had created. Agastya and Aman did not have experience in the restaurant business. They tried to get restaurant owner Sohrab Sitaram to join them. He said no at first.
But Agastya and Aman went ahead anyway. They opened their first new Keventers shop in Pitampura, Delhi, in 2014. It did not do well and closed in less than a year. Later, Sohrab Sitaram did join them as a partner.
Focus on Quality
In 2019, the company had some concerns about the quality of products from one of its licensed shops. They went to the Delhi High Court to address this. During the case, the judge mentioned that he had tried products from several Keventers shops. He felt the quality was not as good as it used to be. The licensed shop said they had made big improvements. The judge suggested that Keventers and the shop should try to solve the problem together. After the judge's comments, some customers shared their thoughts on social media.
