Khalanga is a lively town in Nepal. It is the main town, or "headquarters," of the Darchula District. This district is part of Nepal's Sudurpashchim Province. Khalanga is also part of the Mahakali Municipality in the Mahakali Zone. The town sits right on the bank of the Mahakali River. This river forms the border with Uttarakhand state in India. There is another town on the Indian side of the border called Dharchula.

Living on the Border

The Mahakali River acts as a natural border between Nepal and India. A special bridge connects Khalanga to the Indian town. This is a suspension bridge, which means it hangs from strong cables. People from Nepal and India can cross this border easily during the day. However, the border closes at night for safety reasons.

Many Nepali people often cross into India to buy goods. When they do this, they need to go through a special place called a customs checkpoint. Both Nepal and India have these checkpoints. They help keep track of what goods are moving between the two countries.
