Khalkotauroi facts for kids
The Khalkotauroi, also known as the Colchis Bulls, are amazing mythical creatures from Greek mythology. They are famous for their role in the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece.
Mythology
The Khalkotauroi were two giant bulls. They had hooves made of bronze and mouths that breathed out hot fire! In the ancient story Argonautica, King Aeetes of Colchis promised Jason the valuable Golden Fleece. But first, Jason had to complete a very dangerous task. He needed to yoke these fiery bulls and use them to plough a field. After that, he had to plant the field with dragon's teeth.
Jason was able to survive the bulls' burning flames. He used a special magical potion that protected him from the heat. This potion was given to him by Medea, who was King Aeetes' own daughter. Medea had fallen in love with Jason and wanted to help him.
The Khalkotauroi were a gift to King Aeetes. They were made by Hephaestus, who was the blacksmith of the Greek gods. Hephaestus was known for creating incredible metal objects.
